Chittagong University fined Tk 9 lakh

The Chittagong Environment Department has Tk.  9 lakh 5 thousand fined the Chittagong University (cu) administration for cutting mountains without permission. In the same order, three more companies were fined Tk. 3 lakh 30 thousand  The Department of Environment, Chittagong Division's Deputy Director, Zamir Uddin said on Monday (9th March ) that the companies were fined after hearing about the matter at the Chittagong Divisional Office.

He said the Chittagong University registrar was fined Tk 9 lakh 5 thousand for the hill cut, Sherbangla Furniture Mart and Hanif Enterprise Tk 1 lakh 60 thousand for Tk 3 lakh 20 thousand and Sony Ice Cream Factory was fined Tk 10,000 for violating the conditions of environmental exemption.

Zamiruddin said, after receiving the news, we saw in Sarejmin that the trees and hills were cut at Chittagong University. On 26th February, the Environment Department sent a notice to show cause to the key administration and two timber traders for allegedly cutting hills without permission. In this regard, on 9th March, they were asked to respond as to why no legal action should be taken against the institutions.

Today, they were fined according to Bangladesh Environmental Protection Act, 1995 (Amendment-2010) and Environment Court Act, 2010 for failing to present any reason for the hill cut.
